Louis raths biography

Louis Edward Raths was born in Dunkirk, New York on August 26, 1900, the third eldest in a family of eight children. His mother and father had emigrated independently from Germany earlier, and were first generation Americans.

He attended  public schools in Dunkirk until the age of 16, when he dropped out to work full-time to contribute to the support of his parents. He worked in the local New York Store, selling men’s suits and haberdashery.

In addition to his family obligations, his goal was to save sufficient funds to attend college, even though he had not formally finished high school.

His elder brother (Henry) and younger brother (Herbert) set the precedent for college attendance in the family, both having enrolled in Michigan State University on athletic scholarships.

Raths attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in the Class of 1927.
